I’M TIRED from EUPHORIA HBO (2022): Developing this project, I played on the ambiguity that is created in this scene between Rue’s imagination dictated by the substances she abuses and reality, which is revealed only in the last seconds of the extract. In the first part, where Rue is still in her room, I did the opposite of what was in the original soundtrack, i.e. only sounds real sounds, also inserting sounds that reflect her psychophysical health, then slowly, glimpsing the passage of the church, sounds begin to be introduced that we see - and therefore also hear - such as the creaking door, footsteps, the singer’s voice, a man who applauds, the buzz of chatter always present in the background for all the shots in the church. However, this remains in contrast with the reflection of Rue’s state of mind: you can hear her anxious and heavy breaths, her heart fluttering, and seems to want to come out of her chest. From the moment she imagines embracing her deceased father, the buzz of people and the singer in the church are no longer heard, a sound flashback is heard of the speech that the protagonist made at her parent’s funeral; from the apparently real images, we hear her sobbing and the fuss of the clothes that are shredded between her hands and the bodies that rub against each other in the intense embrace that father and daughter are giving each other. The goal of the resonance of this scene is to try to bring the viewer into Rue’s suffering, to feel at one with her and fully understand what she is going through even without her uttering a word (since I have removed them from the original soundtrack). I gave “a voice” to the protagonist’s anxiety, anguish, and guilt by inserting off-screen voices that she hears in her head. The sounds have been modified using the equalizer and the chromaverb, to contextualize the various sounds; sometimes even the panning that follows the movements of the camera or of the characters or to pass the sound from one headset to another. I tried to avoid clipping by inserting fade in and out on each sound.
